Digital transformation is no longer a future ambition for Ireland’s rapidly evolving construction and built environment industry, it’s an active requirement. The Irish Building Information Modelling (BIM) Mandate has positioned itself as a catalyst for this change, aiming to improve the productivity, quality, and sustainability of built environment projects. At the heart of this digital shift lies the importance of internationally recognised standards, most notably ISO 19650.
To support the industry with BIM adoption, the National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI) has recently announced the publication of the ‘BIM Essentials’ and ‘BIM Advanced’ collection of standards, an initiative of NSAI’s new BIM department, Build Digital and the Office of Government Procurement (OGP).
These collections are aligned with international best practices and public sector requirements, supporting the Government’s Housing for All initiative and the national BIM mandate.
Standards provide the common language and framework necessary for consistency, clarity, and collaboration across diverse stakeholders in construction projects. Without them, digital processes become fragmented, leading to inefficiencies, cost overruns, and errors. The Irish BIM Mandate, which seeks to standardise digital construction practices across public sector projects, is fundamentally reliant on robust and universally accepted standards to succeed.
ISO 19650 is an international series of standards that guide information management over the life cycle of a built asset using BIM. ISO 19650 sets out the principles and requirements for information management, delivery, and collaboration. It covers both capital/delivery (Parts 1 and 2) and operational phases (Parts 3 and 5) of a project.
For Ireland, ISO 19650 is not just a technical requirement, it’s a strategic enabler. It helps ensure:
Under the Irish BIM Mandate, public sector bodies are encouraged and, in many project types, required to adopt BIM in line with ISO 19650. This ensures that Government funded projects are not only future-proofed but also delivered with higher levels of efficiency and accountability. Project procurement strategies increasingly reflect ISO 19650 principles, helping to create a unified national approach.
The successful adoption of ISO 19650 relies not just on policy but also on education and capacity building. Upskilling industry professionals, developing standardised templates, and fostering cross-sector collaboration are all critical. Build Digital plays an essential role in disseminating knowledge and developing practical resources for ISO 19650 implementation.
As Ireland moves forward with its BIM Mandate, the role of standards like ISO 19650 becomes ever more vital. They are the backbone of a digitally enabled, collaborative, and efficient construction industry. By embedding these standards into everyday practice, Ireland is not only aligning with international best practices but also paving the way for a smarter, more sustainable built environment.
